Wall Street greed and double-dealing sparked much of the nation’s recent near-financial collapse, yet many in the chattering classes instead are attacking public employees for this rolling recession. Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on the U.S. Senate’s 61 to 38 vote this morning to end the filibuster on the Jobs Bill Our members are standing up to political and media attacks on public employees and our pensions. Delegates to the 39th International Convention of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO, (AFSCME), today elected Lee Saunders to be the next Secretary-Treasurer of the union representing 1.6 million public service workers. AFSCME activists rallied Wednesday on Boston Common, in solidarity with Council 93, to prevent the loss of critical public services and to pass the jobs bill now stalled in Congress.
Delegates to AFSCME's 39th International Convention pay tribute to former Secretary-Treasurer William Lucy, a giant of the labor and civil rights movements. Our members in New Haven are fighting the DeStefano administration's efforts to destroy good jobs in the community. Our members who collect, process and protect the blood supply for the American Red Cross in Connecticut are part of a national coalition holding ARC accountable for its treatment of workers and donors.
